Dan's 40th birthday

On Sunday, the most important man in our life turned 40 years old!  That is a pretty big milestone.  Because it was a Sunday, he left the house before 8:00 a.m. and got home about 12 hours later.  I let the kids stay up late so they could see him for just a few minutes on his birthday.  (The bear Jonah is holding is Lucky- his classroom bear that spent the weekend with us!)

I was at a loss as to what to do for Dan's birthday.  We are not usually gift givers between the two of us.  But, I couldn't let his 40th birthday pass without something special.  My friend Amanda sent me a text with the perfect idea. "For dan's 40th...have 40 people write a favorite memory of dan and you give him all the letters/memories!"  I immediately knew that was what to do!

Dan's love language is Words of Affirmation so this was the perfect idea.  I had less than a week to pull it off.  But, I did.  And, it was perfect!!!!  Seriously, it was the absolute best idea for him.

Had had a few gifts from church that he needed to open first.  Then he opened all of his cards.  I had him sit down at the table to open our gift.

He immediately opened the book and flipped through it to see who all sent the letters.  There were letters from family, former staff members, former and current church members, college friends, former employers and all the people who live in our house!

I left a few sleeved page protectors int he back so I could put all of his cards in there.  It is turning into such a nice keepsake of this special birthday!

Scooters Squared

We now have two scooters at our house.  That is a really big deal.  Little brother has wanted his own scooter for a while.  I was at Target a couple of months ago and spotted this one on clearance for a cool $11.  That's almost free!!!  We told Micah it was his prize for being potty trained.  But, it just got put together yesterday.  YESTERDAY!  Don't judge...we've been busy.

This picture would have been better if the Jake shirt were replaced with the Spiderman shirt.  Oh well!  He's still pleased as punch!

The best part of the whole scooter adventure was seeing Jonah teach Micah to ride.  Oh, so precious!  He was so patient and gentle with him.  Dan and I stood there grinning like fools while watching them.  Being a parent is a really great thing but moments like that seem to take it to another level!

And, now Micah has been reminded that this was a gift for using the potty.  So, don't be surprised if he asks you what kind of present you get for going to poo-poo.  Because, he totally did ask our mailman that exact question.  And, now our mailman avoids eye contact with us.

A new ride

9 years ago, we bought a blue Honda Accord for Dan.  It had 25,000 miles and served him well.  About three years ago, the radio died.  He has lived without that all this time.  We put some money into it to keep it going but with each new season, more things went wrong.  We spent almost $600 on it in January.  Then, a few weeks later, his headliner fell.  Then, the final blow came when the air went out.  We were about to be out another $1,000 or so.

So, we did lots of research.  We visited lots of places.  We drove lots of cars.  We talked to a lot of people.  We scoured the Internet.  And, when all was said and done, we told ole' Blue goodbye last Saturday.

And, we welcomed a new car into our family.  And, we got a little depressed when we realized that if Dan drives this car 9 years also, he won't be trading it in to a dealership.  Instead, he will be handing the keys to Jonah...his 16 year old son!!!!  Geez!
