A night on the porch

Thursday night, I let the boys come straight from the pool for dinner.  It was so fun.  I waited until Dan got home from work then traded off with him.  He got in the pool with them and I went inside to finish dinner.  I was trying a new steak recipe for the two of us and so I made the boys chicken, mac & cheese and baked sweet potatoes.  I fixed their plates and put them on the table.  Micah spotted the food and started yelling "Eat...eat...eat...eat!"  He was at the table with a spoon in his hand before Jonah got out of the pool.

The boys ate their dinner while we sat outside and ate our steaks.  I'm definitely a fan of the iron skillet method of cooking a steak.  I'm not sure we will do many more grilled steaks after eating them that way.  They were fabulous!  After we were all done with dinner, we just hung out on the patio for several hours.  The boys played with Max and then played at the water table.  It was such a perfect Florida evening!

Jonah's first school dance

Back in May, we attended Jonah's first school dance.  He was so excited to go.  When we got there, he acted like he didn't know a soul and had never been in public before.  Micah, on the other hand, got in the middle of the dance floor and acted like a dancing fool.  We spent the first thirty minutes corralling him and pushing Jonah.

Jonah's friends kept seeking him out and between us and them, he finally went out there. And, once he did, he had a blast.  At the end of the night, he was so sad it was over.  (proof in pictures at the end of this post.)

Apparently, when you are a little boy, the term "dance" really means "fall on the ground and flip around a lot!"

Jonah's friends have been around him enough to be totally used to Micah so they just take him in stride.  He thinks he is one of them anyway, so it works out great.

The beauty of an elementary school dance is that it lasts only a couple of hours.  This is great for the parents but not so great for the kids who were "having so much fun!"

After he refused to quit whining about having to leave, we finally stopped and had a nice chat (once again) about being thankful and grateful.  This is our newest life lesson that we are working on with Jonah.  He has big problems with people leaving or him leaving fun places and so we have been pushing the "rather than be sad, be thankful and grateful."  We have definitely seen a change since we started talking about "thankful and grateful" but he does sometimes have to be reminded.  I asked him to show me a "thankful and grateful" face and got this.
Much better, huh?  This night was another one of those tough parenting moments that you question yourself in the midst of.  We did push him to get out of his comfort zone and enjoy himself.  And, he did.  Had we let him hang on us all night or just sit and watch, he would have been content but missed so much fun.  Instead, we gave him the choice of getting out there and having fun or going home.  At first, he chose go home but we talked about why that shouldn't be his choice.  After thinking a few more minutes, he decided to go dance and play.  He had a blast.

Micah's First Library Story Time

I took Micah to the 0-3 Story Time at the library today.  We were joined by two of his little friends from church.  Maks is 5 month old and Eli is 7 months old.  They are obviously much younger than him but they really enjoyed it.
Micah, on the other hand, decided to see if he could stand on his head.  THE. ENTIRE. TIME.  He even flipped over a couple of times.  I'm guessing we should try the gymnastics place next week rather than the library.

I took about ten pictures that look just like the next one.  That silly boy!  Who knows what he was doing?!?!  So far, reading isn't quite his thing.  Nor is sitting still.  Or being calm.  (See a trend here?)  He sure enjoys life though!

Jonah's Birthday Party

So, I just booked Jonah's birthday party.  Now I don't know what to do with myself.  This is the time of year that I start working on the insanity that is his party.  This year, all I can do is order invitations and pick out a cake.  Yep, that's it.  They don't even allow me to buy the napkins, plates and cups to coordinate.  Oh, and I can't do the party favors either.  I'm stuck with what they offer.  I'm sure that closer to time, I will be grateful for the lack of work, but now, I feel kind of lost.

So, I'm about to pour myself into finding the best invitations EVER!  You know, because that is the ONE thing I get to do for this party.  :-)

The battle of the pillows

During breakfast this morning, Jonah and I looked over the list of 100 things to do this summer.  We tried to find a few things we could do inside since it is raining.  Jonah spotted "pillow fight" and asked what that was.  I explained a pillow fight to him then he said "Yeah, let's do THAT!!!"  So, we started talking about it.  I told him that we definitely needed to wait for Dan to get home.  This needed to be a family event!!

So, Jonah was super excited for the pillow fight to come.  He could hardly wait.  After the first couple of blows, I bowed out and grabbed my camera.  My boys had a ball!  Little Micah is a tough guy and hung right in there with Dan and Jonah.  He took several falls but came right back up fighting.  What a fun time!

Any time Micah landed on a pillow, he would say "Nighhhhhhht-Nighhhhhhhht!"  Then he would giggle until someone hit him with a pillow.

In the midst of the pillow fight, Micah stopped to take a very important phone call from Elmo.  "Hewwoo, Elmo?  Elmo??"

Jimmy sent a text during the big battle so we ended up on FaceTime with him.  He giggled as much as they did.  It really was quite comical.
