Skating

When I was in Junior High, the place to be EVERY Friday night was Funtime Skateland on Cooper Road.  That is where all the cool people hung out.  So, obviously, I was never there.  HA!  Actually, I did go fairly often but just not with the cool people.  I usually got dropped off with my brothers.  Which, by the way, totally lowers your cool points even more.  I have lots of fun memories from lots of time spent at the skating rink.  So, when it was time for Jonah to skate for the first time, my mind was flooded with memories.

Last Thursday night, our local skating rink had a Family and Faith night where they played Christian Music and gave a portion of the ticket sales back to the local church.  We decided this would be a great time to let Jonah try out some wheels on his feet.

Several times, I would put Micah down near the edge so he could watch.  He was so freaked out that he crawled back to my seat before I even got back there.  It was hilarious.  The loud music and crazy lights just about sent him over the edge.

We were super happy when we found out Aunt Jen loves to roller skate because that meant she and Nana came with us.  When she told us she like to skate, we had no idea she was a rock star out there.  You should have seen her.  We were quite impressed.

While Jonah liked to be out on the floor attempting to skate, his favorite thing to do was sit on the side and watch.  I think he was a little intimidated and a lot tired.
Dan joined him on the side sometimes and other times he skated past him for 2-3 laps then coaxed him back onto the floor.  I had to cut my evening short because Micah was WELL past his bedtime and it was obvious to anyone near us.  Dan said Jonah got better as the night went on.  He did fall a few times and there were a few tears but overall, he gave the night a thumbs up!

Tonight, as I rocked my baby boy, tears rolled down my face as I thought of friend in another state possibly rocking her baby to sleep at the same time as me.  Except, while she rocked her 7 month old baby girl, her thoughts were probably full of questions and fear.  Due to some health issues, she had a colonoscopy and was told today there was a 15-18 centimeter mass that they are 99% sure is malignant.  She has surgery Monday at 12 noon to remove the mass.  That will be followed with Chemo and radiation.

My friend is a wife and mother.  She has a 2 year old son and a 7 month old daughter.  I used to babysit her when she was Jonah's age.  Most every Saturday night, I could be found at her house babysitting her and her little sister.  Her parents were workers in our youth ministry.  I spent lots of time with their family.  I lost touch with them over the years but thanks to Facebook, we reconnected about three years ago.  I was surprised at how grownup she was.  I followed her pregnancy with her first and second baby.

Now, I will follow this journey.  There isn't anything I can do from a distance but pray.  Won't you join me too?  I'm not listing her name due to the request of her mother in an email earlier today.  They are keeping things quiet as of now.  But, God knows.  I actually got a Facebook message from her before the email from her mom.  We had hoped to meet up when I'm in Jackson next week so she was telling my why it wouldn't work.  I've been worried all day.  So, pray with me, won't you?

Sweet friend, I know you will read this since you are a constant blog stalker!  ;-)  Know you are loved and prayed for!  I wish I could be there to hug you or play with your kiddos on surgery day.  But, since I'm 14 hours away, I'll just think of you and pray for you every time God brings you to my mind and heart.  I loved you as a five year old little girl and I love you even more for the amazing mommy and wife that you are!

Practicing being 5

Jonah:  Mommy, can you come wipe my booty?

Me:  Jonah, you have to learn to do this yourself!  Mommy won't be there to wipe your booty and your Kindergarten teacher won't do it for you.

Jonah:  Maybe if I ask her nice and say please, she will.

Me:  No, she won't.  You have to learn to do it yourself.

Jonah:  Well, I'm planning to learn but not until I really know what it is like to be five years old.  Right now, I'm just practicing being five.  When I'm really five, I'll wipe my own booty and do all the things you want me to do.  Okay?

Balloons

A week or so before Jonah's birthday, I made a balloon wreath for our front door.  Since Micah is VERY mobile, he wanted to help me.  Unfortunately, his help is a little more than I bargained for so I put him in the bean bag.  The great thing about the bean bag is that he hasn't figured out how to get out of it.  So, it buys me some time.

I blew a couple of the balloons up just a little and gave them to him to play with.  He had so much fun.  He giggled and gasped.

After I finished the wreath and got all of the sticky pins out of his range, I sat him up in the bean bag then let him go where ever he wanted.  He scooted everywhere doing all he could to catch those colorful balloons.

Later that night, as Dan was putting Jonah to bed, I was feeding Micah in his room and heard Jonah say "bring Micah and your camera in here!"  HA!  He wanted pictures in his bed of him with his brother.  Makes me laugh that he requests pictures.  He is so my child!

Kick and Flip

We know Jonah needs to be in some sort of physical activity.  He really wants to do a MMA class.  So, we've tried a couple of different places for the intro class.  A few weeks ago, we tried a Kick and Flip Class that was 30 minutes of MMA and 30 minutes of Gymnastics.  HE LOVED IT.

I really hoped this place would work because he loved it so much but it was TOTAL CHAOS!  Dan and I both felt a little overwhelmed at the organization (or lack thereof) and leadership.  So, we will keep looking.  Micah was with us and just so happened to be on a dose of Prednisone.  HE WAS WILD!  OH MY GOODNESS!  There are no words to describe how crazy that kiddo acted.  One of the parents asked if we thought he should be in the class rather than Jonah.  Does that tell you anything?

We are still looking for the class that will be best for him.  I think we have narrowed it down to the center we will use for MMA but it has been fun trying different options.  He can hardly wait to begin but I think we will wait until the school year starts since we still have some fun summer activities.
